1876-The first microphone was created by Emile Berliner. Early microphones were originally used as early telephones and radio transmitters

Thomas Edison's first phonograph.
1877- Thomas Edison created the phonograph machine. Phonographs made people be able to listen to music when they hadn't been able to any other way.
1892- "Harlem Rag" was the first known Ragtime composition. It was written by the pianist Tommy Turpin.

1895- The original jazz band was created in New Orleans. It was made up of seven boys between the ages of 12-15. This new band was called the "Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band".

Ragtime band album
1897- The first Ragtime piano songs started to be printed. Ragtime also became a popular genre.
1899- Scott Joplin released an album named Maple Leaf Rag. He sold over 100,000 of his album.

1902- 12-year-old Jelly Roll Morton of New Orleans, started his career in music. His music was a mix of different types of music, like Ragtime, The Blues, and French Quadrilles.
1917- Jazz was first noticed as a popular genre after a new band named the "The Original Dixieland Jazz Band" released the first jazz recording. Their album sold over one million copies.

1920-As Morton got older he created chord symbols. His new contribution furthered Jazz to evolve.
